Interesting link between drug use for children and the race for college admissions. If it were true what would we expect to see in the data? More use of specific drugs for ADHD etc amongst classes of people who send kids to more exclusive colleges? More use in geographical locations with more competitive admissions maybe?
The idea had been in the back of my mind: Has the Ritalin/Adderall/Baby-on-Board generation become accustomed to taking officially-sanctioned drugs? And might that dispose the members of that generation to casually pop other pills? Would they thus become more likely to experiment with opioids and then succumb to overdoses?
The "Townhall" presentation with Governor Youngkin really brought these questions to the fore. Here was this nice, young fellow. He certainly present as a regular, dependent user. He popped a pill or two from a stash that some friend had casually passed around?
Anyway, I do hear indications of college kids continuing to depend on "speed," but I haven't examined any hard data. But I do have this uneasy sense that taking serious pharmaceuticals has become a more accepted aspect of the wider culture. It's definitely something to explore ...
