One of the issues about the current popular rifle weapon is how easy it it is to use and shoot. That seems a factor by these shooters. And while the bullets generally are better at maiming rather than killing, enough of them cause death. Still they are in widespread use so removing them is impractical. Aside from the commonality of the weapon, there is a commonality in the persons where we might be able to do something about.

I might do some hands-on research. I've looked up a local shooting range, and I might give one of these short-barreled rifles a try out.

As my skill at firing my 1911 pistol declined, I found the AR type quite easy to use with minimal recoil unlike my older Garand M1 that I once treasured. For my home I got a short shotgun by Mossberg. I tried the larger bores but the kick was substantial. I settled on a 410 that should be adequate in my hallway and easier to use than a pistol. For the home the fact the bullets or shot won't got far is a benefit. The AR bullets can go through a wall but not much farther, in the open they would be a hazard.

A Garand M1? That is a piece from the Second World War, no? That's makes for a bit lore, I imagine. I've wondered what such a piece is like.

I don't have much experience with firearms, but I did, in the last few years, come in to possession of a great uncle's Belgian-made Browning 12 gauge shotgun. (Vintage 1930's?) I didn't know what to do with it until I finally made a point of showing it to a pro. We popped a few cartridges in, and it shoots like a dream. I've been out a few times with it. It's got a long barrel, of course; not so maneuverable in a tight space, perhaps, but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it.

The Garand was a sturdy WW2 semi-auto rifle. They were available as used surplus for quite some time, perhaps still are. I sold mine many years ago. They now sell for $1500+.
